Think of Madeira and you will probably picture lush, green valleys and gardens bursting with orchids, hydrangea and strelitzia. Natural and botanical beauty are undoubtedly the hallmarks of Madeira, but this sun drenched island also offers traditional villages, tasty fresh seafood and a standard of living that is higher than many other holiday islands. Set against a stunning backdrop of rugged mountains, the island is home to beautiful gardens, breathtaking waterfalls and magnificent churches. Topping this off is the bustling capital, Funchal, where you will find everything from cable car rides into the hills and hair-raising downhill journeys by basket-sledge, to boat trips and a choice of bars, restaurants and cafes. There are a wide variety of shops and boutiques and the Old Town’s cobbled streets make the best browsing grounds for wickerwork, tapestry and Madeira wines. Sample local specialities such as ‘caldeirada’ casserole of onion, tomato and several types of fish, or ‘espetada’ flamed beef on skewers. Entertainment is a low key affair on this sophisticated isle, though there are great nightclubs in several hotels-with music and cabarets, and many hotels host live entertainment including folklore evenings.

We are now taking you through to refine your choices.
