Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canary islands and the one closest to Africa (just 95km away). Like its close neighbour, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura is a volcanic island and, of the Canary islands, the one with the oldest history. Its landscape is largely rocky but with mile upon mile of untouched golden, fine-sand beaches and dunes, some of the finest in Europe. Fuerteventura enjoys the year round heat of Africa made all the more pleasant by the Atlantic breezes that fan its shores.

Quieter than the other islands, Fuerteventura is also less built-up and commercial and visitors are attracted by the tranquil atmosphere and the abundance of wonderful, expansive and unspoilt beaches. The main resorts offer a selection of bars, cafés, shops and some of the best fish restaurants in the Canaries, while the more adventurous holidaymaker will be attracted by the small, traditional restaurants throughout the island that offer delicious, fresh Canarian cuisine. If you get the opportunity, try the local "rancho canario", a substantial stew of chickpeas, potatoes, noodles, beef and chicken.

For anyone with an interest in watersports, especially wind-surfing and scuba-diving, the island's perfect weather, water and wind conditions offer unlimited options. But if you prefer to observe rather than participate, the world speed-surfing championships are held there every August.

Those wishing to explore a little further afield will find that there are plenty of possibilities. Lanzarote can be reached by ferry from Corralejo in approx. 40 minutes and is a very pleasant journey. The volcanic island of Lobos (with a total area of just 6km) is also accessible from Corralejo and offers a lovely day trip, in particular for walkers and nature lovers. You can walk around the entire island of Lobos in 2-3 hours.
